Guitar strings constantly pull up and forward with a force of approximately 250 lbs., ultimately causing the top on your guitar to warp. JLD Guitar Research and Development, Inc. has patented a simple way to remedy bowed tops. The JLD Bridge System installs easily through the soundhole in minutes and requires no modification to the instrument.
The above shows the effects of string tension on a typical guitar. There is a pronounced bow behind the bridge and a dip in front of it. The saddle has been filed down to keep the action playable as the top has come up. Because the bridge pin holes are almost even with the top of the saddle, the strings don't exert much downward force on the top.
The bridge pins have been replaced with a set of pins similar to the one shown at left. The JLD Bridge System has been inserted through the soundhole and is held in place by one of the new bridge pins which has been threaded into the top of the Bridge System. A small locknut keeps the additional pins in place. Strings now pass through holes in the sides of the pins instead of being inserted into the bridge pin holes.

Here, the JLD Bridge System has been adjusted to counteract the pull of the strings and the warpage of the top. The top is permanently flat and a playable action has been restored. The strings exert proper downward pressure on the saddle - enabling them to transmit more vibration to the instrument. I am a an older guitarist who likes to work on my own and sometimes my friends instruments when they need a little help. I have used the Bridge Doctor a few times now with great results. After I have removed and repaired the bridge area, I have installed a Bridge Doctor to reduce the belly bulge and lift the sagging from the bridge to the sound hole area. It has helped lower the action and made these instruments much easier to play while not noticeably affecting the sound quality of the guitar. This is a real great product for the musician who may own a less expensive guitar, or can’t afford to pay a luthier for an expensive neck reset. I’m very pleased with the results.

One caveat: if your guitar has other problems, such as a bowed neck or broken top braces, this won't cure those. Also, if you have any doubts about your ability to install the Bridge Doctor, seek professional help.
These are great for a simple fix to minor belly bow in guitars. They also enhance the tone somewhat to give a good resonance sound for the avid player who want's a little extra bonus with their performance. Breedlove uses them in their new models with thin sound boards to keep the bridge from bowing. Try one and you'll be pleased.
The guitar is not expensive, and has a laminate top, but good sound until the bridge raised too much to play. Two weeks with no strings and a weight on top got it ready, then I was able to install the truss in about 40 minutes. It should be a lasting fix., given the design.
