1. Learn the names of the open strings. These serve as reference points to learn the notes from the open strings through the 5th fret.
2. The note on the 1st string at the 5th fret is A440. It has an audio frequency of 440 Hz and is the international standard of pitch.

All guitar tuners and metronomes use this note as their default tuning pitch. Use this reference point to learn the notes on the 1st string from frets 4-9.
Why? Because guitar music sounds an octave lower than written. Notice the little 8 at the bottom of the clef. That means the pitch sounds an octave lower than written. The clef is called an octave treble clef. Usually, guitar music uses the standard treble clef, and it is understood that the pitches sound an octave lower than written.
3. Use the beginners' tuning method to learn the notes' locations at the 5th fret. This reference point will help you learn the notes from frets 3-8.
