Young Kid Playing Guitar With Buddy Guy

Young Kid Playing Guitar With Buddy Guy

- Taste and Brew! of Kalamazoo landed a huge name in the blues for this Saturday, Buddy Guy. And he's bringing along a new name, Quinn Sullivan.

Guy is 76, number 30 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He's also won six Grammy Awards.

Who's

Born in Louisiana, he went to Chicago in the '50s. Guy learned his craft as a member of Muddy Waters' band in the '60s, and as house guitarist for Chess Records, playing on tracks by Howlin' Wolf, Koko Taylor and Junior Wells.

His style was much more wild and rock-influenced for Chicago blues at the time -- Jimi Hendrix praised him as an influence. The more-conservative Chess held back on making Guy a star.

He worked for many labels through the '70s, and it wasn't until the '80s -- thanks to Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan for bringing attention to him -- that Guy began to be recognized nationally as a blues star. His latest, double-disk Rhythm & Blues (out July 30 on RCA), features guests including Kid Rock, Keith Urban, and Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith.

Sullivan is 14, and learned to play by ear after he got his first guitar at age three. At six he got to play on Ellen, at eight he met Guy at the legend's concert in Sullivan's home town, New Bedford, Mass.

The kid got backstage to have Guy sign his guitar before the show. Sullivan told Rolling Stone, I just did a few licks and Buddy told me, 'You be ready when I call you ...' I was like, 'What?'

Guy called Sullivan on stage, where he played with the master. The moment is captured on YouTube. After playing a bit with the eight-year-old, Guy, with a look of amazement, walked off stage to let Sullivan do his thing.

I'm like, 'There's no way in the world you can play these notes, ' Guy told Rolling Stone. I couldn't even play a radio when I was seven or eight years old! Players like him come along once in a lifetime. I said, 'I need to let the world know about you.'

Guy became Sullivan's mentor, bringing him along to gigs when schoolwork allowed. Sullivan has been doing his own sets while opening for Guy, the biggest of which was the Crossroads Guitar Festival at Madison Square Garden in April. Sullivan got to hang with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and John Mayer.

Sullivan is modest about his talent. He told CBS This Morning July 12 that his ability just kinda happened, and that he never thinks of himself as good.

He cannot name the four Spice Girls or their famous monikers (I can only name one, Victoria Beckham), but he is on first-name basis with 78-year-old American blues guitarist, Buddy Guy. Add to it that Sullivan's barely 15, and has shared the stage with greats like BB King and Eric Clapton.

Born in 1999, Sullivan started playing the guitar at age 3. By 6, he'd made an appearance on Ellen and by 8, joined Buddy Guy on stage. Now 15 and modest at heart, Sullivan dismisses monikers like child prodigy and whiz kid, which accompany most of his interviews: I find it funny cause I don't consider myself anything but a working musician and a guitar player and singer/songwriter, he says.

Juggling homework with hectic touring schedule, his fiery guitar licks have earned him fans from all over the world, but he'd like to be seen as a regular middle-schooler: I'm into shows like Family Guy and Restaurant Impossible and am more of an English and History kid! I love all of that stuff. As a songwriter, writing is very fun for me. Math and Science I'm not too crazy about, he says.

Though being a bluesman in the Bieber era isn't easy. I wouldn't say blues music is on most of my friend's iTunes libraries, but in a way I do think they can understand what these musicians are talking about… Blues music to me is the soundtrack of everyday life. I think everyone in some point in his or her lives has lived it, not even knowing there is music behind it.

This weekend, Sullivan will perform at the fifth edition of Mahindra Blue Festival in Mumbai along with five-time Grammy winner Buddy Guy, the gorgeous Doyle Bramhall II and Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes among others. At the festival, you can join us in cheering him as he plays tracks from his two albums Cyclone (2011) and Getting There (2013): I'll be playing mostly my original stuff from my last two records, and some covers I love to do live. I think I'm the same person on and off stage, maybe a bit louder onstage, he adds.
