- Taste and Brew! of Kalamazoo landed a huge name in the blues for this Saturday, Buddy Guy. And he's bringing along a new name, Quinn Sullivan.
Guy is 76, number 30 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He's also won six Grammy Awards.

Born in Louisiana, he went to Chicago in the '50s. Guy learned his craft as a member of Muddy Waters' band in the '60s, and as house guitarist for Chess Records, playing on tracks by Howlin' Wolf, Koko Taylor and Junior Wells.

His style was much more wild and rock-influenced for Chicago blues at the time -- Jimi Hendrix praised him as an influence. The more-conservative Chess held back on making Guy a star.
He worked for many labels through the '70s, and it wasn't until the '80s -- thanks to Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan for bringing attention to him -- that Guy began to be recognized nationally as a blues star. His latest, double-disk Rhythm & Blues (out July 30 on RCA), features guests including Kid Rock, Keith Urban, and Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith.
Sullivan is 14, and learned to play by ear after he got his first guitar at age three. At six he got to play on Ellen, at eight he met Guy at the legend's concert in Sullivan's home town, New Bedford, Mass.

I'm like, 'There's no way in the world you can play these notes, ' Guy told Rolling Stone. I couldn't even play a radio when I was seven or eight years old! Players like him come along once in a lifetime. I said, 'I need to let the world know about you.'
Guy became Sullivan's mentor, bringing him along to gigs when schoolwork allowed. Sullivan has been doing his own sets while opening for Guy, the biggest of which was the Crossroads Guitar Festival at Madison Square Garden in April. Sullivan got to hang with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and John Mayer.

At the festival, you can join us in cheering him as he plays tracks from his two albums Cyclone (2011) and Getting There (2013): I'll be playing mostly my original stuff from my last two records, and some covers I love to do live. I think I'm the same person on and off stage, maybe a bit louder onstage, he adds.
