WHEN it comes to guitarists there’s one who even the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Brian May look up to. And that’s Hank Marvin, the first British guitar hero.
Founder of the 1960s megaband The Shadows – the band that backed Cliff Richard – Hank is still working his musical magic and later this month kicks off a four-state tour with his quartet in his home state of Western Australia.

The British-born father of five and grandfather of three admits Australia was not their first choice when they decided to chase the sun and a more relaxed lifestyle.

But his tastes in reading are just as eclectic as his music – he has recently read Alan Bullock’s Parallel Lives, which charts the rise of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin from childhood.
When he’s not reading, Hank plays beautiful music. The group’s debut album, Django’s Castle, listed high in the US jazz charts last year.

The Shadows were known for their instrumtal songs, mainly; Apache (1960), F.B.I. (1961), Wonderful Land (1962), and Foot Tapper (1963), among many others. The band split up briefly betwe 1968 and 1973, but was reformed by Marvin, Welch and Bnett.
And a 2005 European tour was also undertak. Cliff Richard and the Shadows performed the final tour dates in 2009 and 2010.
His first critically lauded, self-titled solo album of instrumtals, which featured guitar set to orchestrated backing, was released in 1969, following the first disbanding of the Shadows, in late 1968. The single Sacha topped the singles chart in New South Wales, Australia, having be 'discovered' by two DJs at 2WG Wagga Wagga.
