Epiphone hat wieder zugeschlagen! Nachdem in der vergangenen Woche eine Reihe neuer Modelle vorgestellt wurden, darunter die ES-335 und ES-339 , Hummingbird, J-45 und J-200 sowie die Coronet, Wilshire und Crestwood, geht es nun munter weiter. Puh! Fans erschwinglicher Halbresonanzgitarren kommen hier voll auf ihre Kosten. Vorhang auf für die Epiphone Riviera und Casino.
Die neuen Epiphone Casino „Worn“-Modelle sind in drei neuen Lackierungen erhältlich: Olive Drab, Ebony und Denim Blue. Letztere ist ganz klar mein absoluter Favorit! Alle erhalten ein Pärchen Pro P-90-Tonabnehmer mit zwei Lautstärke- und Tonreglern. Bei der Elektronik wurde nicht gespart – die Gitarren verfügen über hochwertige CTS-Potis.
Die Casinos werden in 5-lagiger Ahorn-Halbresonanz-Bauweise gefertigt, gepaart mit einem verleimten Hals aus Mahagoni mit 60er Jahre C-Profil. Das Griffbrett aus Indian Laurel hat 22 Medium Jumbo-Bünde und ansehnliche Trapezeinlagen. Die Hardware umfasst einen LockTone Tune-O-Matic-Steg, eine Diamond Trapez-Bridge und einen Graph Tech NuBone-Sattel.

Als nächstes kommt das neue Riviera-Modell an die Reihe. Die Grundmaterialien für die Konstruktion sind die gleichen wie bei der Casino, jedoch erhält sie einen Sustain Block aus massivem Ahorn und einen Satz Epiphone Pro-Mini-Humbucker anstelle der P90. Ein weiterer markanter Unterschied ist die „Frequensator“ Brückenkonstruktion im Stil der 1930er Jahre. Ziemlich stylisch, findet ihr nicht auch? Die Riviera wird in zwei Ausführungen angeboten: Sparkling Burgundy und Royal Tan. Der Preis erscheint mir fair.

Dass viele Gitarrenhersteller generell auf einem grünen Zweig sind und sich Lockdown-Maßnahmen positiv auf Absatzzahlen auswirken können, rührt vom einfachen Phänomen her, dass die Menschen zuhause nun mal mehr Zeit für ihr Hobby haben – oder es prinzipiell das erste Mal angehen.
Epiphone lesen die Zeichen der Zeit jedenfalls richtig. Demnächst testen wir mehrere Epiphone Prophecy Gitarren aus der neuen Reihe und dass wir uns spätestens im neuen Jahr die Riviera ansehen werden, ist nicht unwahrscheinlich. Also – was legt uns der Gibson-Cousin gen Ende des Jahres vor? Einen Wink aus den 60s – die Casino in neuen Finishs sowie die lang erwartete Riviera.
Die Casino überrascht in ihrem Aufbau nicht – es handelt sich um eine bissige, voluminöse Hollowbody für Blues und Rock aus Ahorn, einem Mahagoni Hals und einem breiten 60s C-Profil sowie einem 24 Zoll Radios. Das Griffbrett besteht aus Indian Laurel und kommt mit 22 Jumbo Frets daher. Trapezoid Inlay und LockTone Tune-O-Matic-Brücke runden das Ganze ab. In Sachen Sound hat man es mit zwei P-90 zu tun sowie einem Volume und Tone-Poti. Dürfte sich bei zwischen 400, - und 500, - Euro einpendeln, das Ganze.

Die Riviera ist auch eine Hollowbody mit dem Casino Shape und stammt auch aus den 60ern. Sie ist der Casino nicht unähnlich, besitzt aber vor allem andere Pickups, die hier den entscheidenden Unterschied machen. Die Epiphone Pro Mini Humbuckers in Neck und Bridge sind ein bisschen weicher und saturierter als die P-90. Der Retro-Sound wird optisch begleitet durch ein Tailpiece aus den 30ern und einem coolen Sparkling Burgundy und Royal Tan – Finish. Dürfte also vielleicht 100, - Euro ca mehr kosten als die Epiphone Casino. Interessant ist, dass die Gitarren auf der offiziellen Webpage von Epiphone nicht gelistet sind, dafür aber schon bei den Händlern.
Man darf also getrost die Frage stellen, ob da noch was kommt. Die Bonamassa Black Beauty beispielsweise haben wir uns für ein Review dick eingekreist – vielleicht gelingt es Epiphone endlich, den gespaltenen Ruf hinter sich zu lassen.

New Epiphone Semi Hollow Guitars For 2020 (riviera, Worn Casino, Es 335, )
Unlike the ‘Inspired by Gibson’ 335 and 339 we looked at recently, the Riviera and Casino are not Gibson replicas. They have always been original Epiphone designs, albeit ones that have taken due inspiration from the Gibson ES-335 and 330 models.
Both the Riviera and the Casino have a sensibility that is very ‘sixties’, whether by association with artists from the period or just the fabulous retro design of each model. We’ll take a look at each model in turn, but it’s worth noting that both of these are for players of today, not the past. Each Epiphone guitar we’re looking at has features and specifications that make them comfortable for contemporary guitarists, with style and attitude from the Golden Age. A perfect blend, in other words!
Let us begin, then, with the new Epiphone Riviera guitar. First off, we’re pleased to report that it is very much in keeping with our idea of historical Rivieras: the Frequensator tailpiece and mini humbuckers are fully in place! There are two finishes available – Royal Tan and Sparkling Burgundy – and both look great. The Burgundy one has a very ‘early Oasis’ vibe to it, so if you’re a Gallagher fan, you’ll be eyeing this one up already!
Epiphone Announces Reimagined Versions Of Classic '60s Hollowbodies, The Casino And Riviera
Build-wise, the Riviera is a familiar story to those who know about the ES-335. Layered Maple is used for the body, with a solid Maple centre-block for adding sustain and combating feedback. Those mini humbuckers are more than just cosmetic differences, too: they impart a tighter, more biting tone that works particularly well with ‘Texas’ tones and lightly overdriven arpeggios. No wonder The Strokes were a fan of the Riviera!
The neck bears 22 medium jumbo frets, making this so much more playable than vintage examples. There are small parallelogram inlays to add a touch of authentic style, and a Graphtech NuBone nut, for modern tuning finesse. It looks vintage, in other words, but it plays like a modern guitar. Perfect!
It’s a famous guitar indeed, the Epiphone Casino. Fully hollow, sporting a pair of ‘dogear’ P90 single coil pickups and loved by everyone from Radiohead to Paul Weller, the Epiphone Casino is a fully original take on the semi-acoustic guitar. In an interesting move, Epiphone have decided, for now at least, to offer the Casino in a trio of ‘worn’ finishes only. We were expecting the usual Sunburst and Natural (a la John Lennon) finishes, so this has come as a pleasant surprise!
Epiphone Drop Some Fresh Casino Worn And Riviera Guitars
In this context, the term ‘worn’ finish translates more or less to ‘thin satin’ finish. Epiphone offer the casino in Worn Olive Drab, Worn Denim and Worn Black. We think these colours are just on the right side of bold, and in fact suit the guitar really well! It’s brilliant to be offered something so familiar but just a little bit different at the same time!
The Casino is known very much as a rhythm instrument. This doesn’t mean that rhythm is all you can do in one – far from it - but the Casino’s inherently choppy, snappy sound has a breeziness to it that encourages a more rhythmic playing style. Also, the neck being sunk slightly further into the body than other semis means that upper-octave guitar solos are a little trickier to pull off!
Epiphone’s new model Casino is, like the original, fully hollow. This makes for a light instrument, thought it hangs fine on a strap. It’s a very fun guitar to play, with a comfortable 60s-style C neck and the same medium jumbo frets as the Riviera. Attractive binding is used on the top, bottom and fingerboard to provide context and contrast for those worn finishes.
