Can GarageBand for macOS make music more accessible? The newest release brings free lessons for those wanting to learn. And on another note, it provides crucial bug fixes for blind users.
For a lot of Mac users, GarageBand will be the first taste of music making with technology. So it’s important Apple gets it right. There’s not really any direct comparison on another platform like this, either – GarageBand is available as a free install for new Macs, and yet provides an easy window into the same engine and sounds that drive Logic Pro. Those two applications are developed in parallel – indeed, as a regular Logic user, I was impressed by how much is now familiar in its entry-level sibling.
Reading the reviews in the App Store, though, it’s apparent how challenging it can be serving that audience. Move things around, and you make GarageBand’s years of existing users unhappy. Leave them as they are, and you might turn off potential new users.

Most of this involves new sounds – the Guzheng, Koto, and Taiko drums found in the iOS edition, new vintage Mellotron sounds, electronic roots and jazz “Drummers.”
First, the range of lessons Apple offers to get you started with an instrument are now free. For someone with a new Mac, it’s a nice way to get a small taste of learning an instrument.
I downloaded a few of these. There’s no question Apple is behind third-party offerings in this area. And it’s a shame they didn’t find a way to open up this feature to those developers, too, the way they have, say, the iBooks store. On the pop side, there just isn’t enough variety – the selections are embarrassingly white, and weirdly outdated. But there’s some charm to the selection. I have no doubt it’s a casual way to get a taste for going out and getting lessons yourself. And I think Apple deserves some kudos for making this a default install.
The other thing worth mentioning – this is a good example of how Apple is responding to user feedback for musicians with different accessibility needs.
Practice Guitar Chords In Garageband On Mac
MacOS has a technology called Voice Over, which reads out what’s on the screen to users who are vision impaired. That’s important, because it means the non-seeing user is interacting with the same layout and structure as a seeing user. Apple demonstrated this onstage at a recent developer conference with one of their own blind employees, and I got a chance recently to attend a talk by two consultants who give feedback on using these features.
In comments, you can read up on what was going wrong in GarageBand 10.2: one blind user complains because they’re lost in the very first screen of mixing. (I want to copy and paste what they wrote, but the App Store won’t let me, so I’m going to commit an accessibility faux pas and include the screenshot here – sorry.)
VoiceOver now announces the type of track that is selected in the New Track dialog. VoiceOver now speaks the names of tracks when interacting with regions in the tracks area.

That’s a tiny change, but imagine that is a wall between you and being able to actually know what track you’re editing.
And again, because this is a free install on the Mac, it’s a big deal. Just removing that one barrier opens up music making on the computer to a whole range of Mac users. Seit über 14 Jahren gibt es nun inzwischen die kostenlose DAW GarageBand, die Apple entweder auf Macs vorinstalliert oder zum nachträglichen Download im App Store anbietet. Und eigentlich kann die Software auch eine ganze Menge, zumal sie inzwischen auch optisch ihrem großen Bruder Apple Logic ProX immer ähnlicher wird. Das größte Manko gegenüber Logic sind sicher die fehlenden MIDI-Ausgänge. Doch genau die brauchen diejenigen eben nicht, die sowieso nur im Rechner arbeiten.

Seit 2009 und GarageBand 5 gibt es neben den klassischen DAW-Funktionen auch einen Bereich zum Erlernen eines Instruments. Ein Jahr später folgten dann Lehrvideos für Gitarre und Klavier, doch viel gab es in diesem Bereich insgesamt nicht und alles war kostenpflichtig. Das hat Apple nun geändert.
Mit Version 10.3 für macOS hat Apple nämlich nicht nur die Optik ein weiteres Mal aufgefrischt, jede Menge neuer Sounds und zwei neue Drummer dazugegeben sowie die Kompatibilität mit der Version für iOS-Geräte verbessert. Besonders interessant sind auch die über 20 sogenannten „Artist Lessons“ für Gitarre oder Klavier, die man kostenlos herunterladen kann. Darin erklären bekannte Musiker, wie man einen ihrer Hits spielt. Auf Deutsch heißt das „Lerne mit Musikern“.
Im Gitarrenbereich sind das zum Beispiel Ben Gibbard von Death Cab for Cutie, der die Songs „Soul Meets Body“ und „I Will Follow You Into the Dark“ lehrt, oder Dewey Bunell und Gerry Beckley von der Band America, die u. a. das für jeden Anfänger in fünf Minuten erlernbare „Horse With No Name“ erklären. Genau, das ist der Welthit, der schon unzählige Male gecovert wurde und der wirklich einfach zu spielen ist.

Auch im Klavierbereich hat Apple ein paar große Namen an Land gezogen! Wie wäre es mit Norah Jones, die am stylisch-roten Wurlitzer-Piano ihren Song „Thinking About You“ für Fortgeschrittene vermittelt? Und wo wir schon im Pop-Bereich sind: Ryan Tedder von One Republic zeigt dir, wie der Song „Apologize“ auf dem Klavier gespielt wird.
Aktuell stehen 22 Videos zum kostenlosen Download bereit. Zum Test habe ich mal die Lektion zum „Pferd ohne Namen“ heruntergeladen. 791, 4 MB machten sich danach auf meiner Festplatte breit.
Eine solche Übung läuft im Vollbildmodus und besteht nicht nur aus einem Video in Originalsprache mit Untertiteln, sondern auch aus der Ansicht des Gitarrenhalses, auf dem die passenden Akkorde angezeigt werden. Alles ziemlich einfach! Auch die Tabs werden bei Bedarf zwischen Video und Halsansicht abgebildet. Wenn nicht, ist das Video entsprechend größer.

Nach dem Intro werden in diesem Beispiel erst die Akkorde, dann das Strumming erklärt. Das erlernt wirklich jeder in ein paar Minuten. Im Original aber wurde der Song in einem anderen Tuning gespielt. Und nun sehen wir auch, warum die Lektion knappe 800 MB verschlingt: In einer weiteren Lektion wird uns diese Variante nämlich ebenfalls ausführlich erklärt. Um das neue Tuning auf seiner Gitarre einzustellen, nimmt man einfach den in GarageBand integrierten Tuner. Hier gibt’s dann neben Chords und Strumming auch noch das Solo zum selber Spielen.
Bis hierher kam alles von Dewey Bunell. Aber im Original hören wir noch eine 12-String. Und was die spielt, erklärt uns anschließend noch Gerry Beckley. Und zwar mit beiden unterschiedlichen Live- und Album-Soli – wenn schon, dann auch ausführlich!
Es macht tatsächlich Spaß, wenn die Musiker vor einem sitzen, die den Song auch im Original spielen. Und mit der Play-Funktion kann man sich aufnehmen und von GarageBand auch überprüfen lassen, wie gut man war. Das habe ich vorsichtshalber mal gelassen, um mich nicht direkt zu blamieren. ;)

Apple hat sicher gemerkt, dass es in diesem Bereich noch viel Nachholbedarf gab. Auf dem Markt gibt es jede Menge sehr gute Video-Lessons, mit denen man Instrumente erlernen kann. Wenn man aber Rechner verkaufen will und dann auch möchte, dass die eigene Software genutzt wird, muss man eben auch Content liefern – am besten direkt kostenlos! Genau das hat Apple mit dem Update auf Version 10.3 auf dem Mac getan. Die Artist Lessons sind nachvollziehbar und haben dank der bekannten Musiker auch die nötige Authentizität.
Jetzt können wir nur hoffen, dass Apple in diesem Bereich nachlegt, denn irgendwann hat man auch die letzte der 22 Lektionen geprobt, bis sie einem zu den Ohren raushängt. Natürlich nur, sofern man bereit ist, sich auf die größere musikalische Bandbreite einzulassen. Und bitte lasst das nicht wieder neun Jahre dauern.
