Minibar Guitar Pedal

Minibar Guitar Pedal

The Minibar is a liquid analyser pedal, a truly revolutionary stompbox that uses the properties of a liquid to decide the sound of your guitar!

Rainger FX are inviting you to take part in an experiment in tone-shaping discovery…. This mini-pedal makes no sound at all until you pour liquid into it – any kind at all – and the various qualities of that liquid decide the amount – and to some degree the quality – of the distortion, and also the amount of treble and bass. What you use to do this is entirely up to you – any sort of mixture you can dream up!

Rainger

The pedal is simplicity itself; it has a volume knob, and a small watertight container mounted in the top panel; unscrew the lid, get pouring – and analyse! Then, when you’ve got your own unique sound, screw the lid on tightly and you’re ready to go. (Finger tight is fine – but don’t get too forceful as some liquids can give a sticky-ness over time that makes the lid harder to undo) .

Efectos :: Gain / Drive :: Fuzz :: Mini Bar

To start again with experimenting, just open the lid and wipe out the container with a paper towel. You’ll hear the guitar sound crumble away to nothing, but as the new liquid hits the container the resulting new sound appears.

The conductivity of the guitar’s AC signal generally decides the amount of gain, and the opacity (how easily light passes through it) decides the amount of treble and bass. The Minibar often creates satisfying ‘band-pass’ tones – nicely uncompressed, and with plenty of satisfying harmonics and plectrum ‘cluck’.

Note; the pedal is sold with no liquid in it, and so will make no noise at all – until you do your bit! It’s up to you to go and experiment….

Anything at all – nothing can be damaged by trying something not so suitable. We’ve found that water-based liquids give similar levels of gain…

De-ionised water (from a hardware store) has great distorted sound. Try adding a few drops of red wine or coffee to tone down the high-end and add bass. Jagermeister has a great dark drive to it. Coca cola has a nice mild overdrive with plenty of lower mids. Nail polish remover sounds good….

Yes – weird, that! We don’t fully understand the chemistry going on here, but there are a few liquids that don’t get any kind of response…. Don’t know why – but olive oil seems to be one of them. Remember – this is an experiment!

We’ve noticed that dissolving salt into the liquid (if it’s possible) enhances the gain. Also possibly bubbles? Or maybe sugar? (Maybe you can discover something else?)We have to offer up thanks to the gear gods for a genius with quite such limitless fertile imagination. I can imagine Gamechanger Audio’s take on this would be quite different and more complex, but David is definitely not afraid of the stranger side of things - with none of his effects pedals being even remotely vanilla. And even though there are some practicality issues with the Minibar in its current format - it is nonetheless ingenious and effective in what it does.

David’s latest creation has only a single control on it - a volume knob! The Gain Structure and Tonality of the overdrive are determined by what sort of liquid you pour into its mini-bowl-like receptacle. At the base of the bowl you can see two sensors - which sculpt the tonality of the pedal depending on the density and viscosity of the liquid as well as its darkness and opacity / transparency. Different liquids and fluids will give you quite different tones - with denser and darker liquids producing more bass-heavy, gainier and generally darker tones. And the lighter ones giving you more treble-y lighter styles of overdrive - but do not that density and viscosity are key too, as you can get some very dense clear liquids.

For practicality sake I would have preferred some sort of swappable capsule approach here - as the need to clean out and dry the analysis chamber / receptacle for every change surely gets tedious after a while. The receptacle has a lid to it, so the unit is pretty self-contained as such, and obviously you can use your guitar’s control knobs for further sculpting - while you need an entirely new and different liquid if you wish to significantly change Gain or Tone.

There are obviously various ways Rainger FX could have gone here - like I say, I imagine Gamechanger would have come up with quite a different approach for the same sort of format. Being straightforward and easy translates to a relatively low cost of just £119. This is a genuine fun inspiration machine that most can afford - and probably good for when you are totally stuck in a rut. Yet I would imagine it would have rather limited touring applications!
