3. is the tuning also explained on the DVDS. It always annoys me when the E chord is explained in flamenco schools, or how a guitar is tuned.

I am in possession of the two DVDs of , also the one of Oscar Herrero. In fact, Sr. Herrero talks a lot, also explains things that are actually long known to a guitarist who comes to the flamenco guitar outside of Spain. This is due to the fact that our Spanish friends always think they have to explain guitar playing from scratch and are not aware that most of them have already learned/played guitar elsewhere. This is not only my opinion, but can be read everywhere in the forums of the WWW. does not act this way. That's why - and also because of his pedagogical skills - his works are so popular.

But now to the DVDs: He does not treat the E chord, also not the tuning, talks/explains as much as necessary. Basically, the DVDs are analogous to his Flamenco Guitar School Vol 1/2, except that he persistently uses new media technology (DVD). What he shows in the print medium with many pictures (e.g. Rasguedao) is excellently solved on the DVD (it is possible to switch to different camera positions, also called multi-angle, while the film is running). Also, the hand can be seen from an unusual soundhole position (how this was shot would really interest me?). How he then explains the compás using animation (flamenco clock) and audio examples is unique. In Vol 2 he explains the Buleriás using palmas and foot exercises. You can see at the same time his Bulerías compás on the guitar, as well as the flamenco clock running along and also his foot. The way he presents the different ways to tap the foot should be hard to beat from a technical standpoint, as well as how he presents it. In the book, this chapter was too complicated for me, or was never really tackled on my part. Now on the DVD - animated, it motivates immensely to imitate.

With these DVDs you can see that not simply a video was transferred to the silver disc, but there someone (probably he himself) has come up with quite a bit to fully exploit this medium. I mean to say, the DVDs are really programmed properly (I'm from the profession myself) to work with and not just watch a video and then put it back on the shelf.

The quality is excellent. All lessons from the books are covered and can be selected via menus, looped, played in normal and slow tempo. In the slow versions, the note image appears at the bottom of the screen and - I've never seen anything like it - a cursor bar runs along in sync with music. The first days the technological side of these DVDs fascinated me so eminently that only in the course of time I could concentrate on the essential, just what should be conveyed.

Die Tabulatur wurde auch mit Zeitwerten versehen, da ich der Meinung bin, dass sich auch der Tabulatur-Leser, sei es nur unbewusst, an diesen Zeitwerten orientiert.

Für die Kenntnisse und Erfahrungen, die in diesem Lehrwerk festgehalten sind, waren meine zahlreichen Aufenthalte und die Arbeit in Madrid und Andalusien genauso wichtig, wie die Freundschaft und Bekanntschaft mit großen und weniger großen „Maestros“ Und nicht zu vergessen, die erste Inspiration, durch den Gitarristen und langjährigen Freund Manolo Lohnes, der viel zur Entwicklung des Flamenco in Deutschland beigetragen hat. Im Laufe meiner 15jährigen Unterrichtstätigkeit wurde ich immer wieder aufs Neue gefordert zu überdenken und zu analysieren, was meine Finger und vor allem die der großen „Maestros“ machen und wie ich das „Erlernte“ und das „Erfahrene“ weitergeben kann. Wie alle, die Flamenco, ob Gitarre oder Tanz, unterrichten, wurde ich von meinen Schülern zum „Lehrer“ gemacht. Wesentliches habe ich auch bei den unzähligen Auftritten gelernt, die ohne jegliche Probe abliefen und bei denen mir die TänzerInnen und SängerInnen erst kurz vor dem Auftritt in der Garderobe vorgestellt wurden. Die Zusammenarbeit und das Unterwegssein, vor allem mit „Gitanos“, haben mir, als „ausländischer Flamenco“, Musiker und Mensch, viel gegeben. Durch all dies, wie auch durch die Zusammenarbeit mit meiner Partnerin und „Bailaora graciosa“ Lela de Fuenteprado, wurde der Flamenco das, was er heute für mich ist - „La vida“.

Flamenco ist nicht nur Gitarren-Musik. Obwohl er in aller Welt durch die Gitarre, bzw. durch Gitarristen wie Carlos Montoya und Manitas del Plata in den 60iger Jahren und in jüngster Zeit durch Paco de Lucía, bekannt wurde, bilden die Eckpfeiler nach wie vor der Gesang, der Tanz, die Gitarre und die „Jaleos“.

Flamenco ist zugleich eine sehr emotionale und doch strenge Kunstform und eine Lebenseinstellung. Flamenco bedeutet - Spontaneität, Improvisation in der Musik und im Lebensstil. Im „Jetzt“ leben. Sich nicht aufgeben, trotz stärkster Bedrängnis. Mit dem Ventil der Musik und des Tanzes, seelische und körperliche Not überwinden, ohne Aggression. Das Schicksal wird akzeptiert, aus jeder Situation das Beste gemacht, sei es so noch wenig - und das alles mit ausgeprägter Lebensfreude und starkem Lebenswillen.

Dieses Lehrwerk kann aber bestenfalls nur Grammatik und Vokabular der „Sprache“ Flamenco sein. Die Feinheiten und der Reichtum dieser „Sprache“, sollten dort erlernt werden, wo man sie spricht.
