Fender Stratocaster Electric Acoustic Guitar

A year after launching theirsuccessful Acoustasonic Telecaster, Fender has now unveiled an S-shapedversion of its popular acoustic/electric hybrid design - the American Acoustasonic Stratocaster. Very much in-keeping withthe original formula(albeit with a Stratbodyand headstock shape), the Acoustasonic Stratocaster does however boast a slightly different control layoutand now features10 built-in voices rather than the 5 found in its Telecaster counterpart, including 3 electric sounds instead ofjust 1.

Still powered by the samerevolutionary Fender and Fishman-designed acoustic engine, this hybrid instrument allows you to seamlessly change from convincing acoustic sounds toplugged-in electric tones; completely on-the-fly.Fundamentally, the Acoustasonic Strat is designed to give electric guitarists a familiar and playable feel, yet projectsextremely convincing acoustic sounds along with tones that you'd expect from a standard Strat.

The most striking aesthetic feature of the Fender Acoustasonic Strat is its soundhole, placed at the centre of the body. Whereasother acoustic/electrichybrids seen before have tended to stay closer to the latter from an aesthetic standpoint, the Acoustasonic Strat, however, embraces more of aconventional acoustic construction.

With a full hollow body crafted from Mahogany, you can expect rich lows and a bell-like mid-range. Using Fender's 'Stringed Instrument Resonance System' (SIRS) and innovative 'Transverse' bracing, this design helps the Acoustasonic Stratocasterto achieve the response and harmonic breadth of a typical acoustic guitar, where you can feel thevibrationsresonating through your body.

Unlike most acousticsthough, Fender kept playing comfort in mind when designing the Acoustasonic Strat. Adding a comfortable forearm contour, this allows you to strum chords without feeling any pain or fatigue -making it a great live workhorse. And despite the body being hollow, the thin and compact Stratshape largelyremains intact, meaning that electric players will feel particularly at home on this instrument.

The Acoustasonic's body is paired with a bolt-on Mahogany neck, adding even more tonal depth. Covered in a smooth open-pore Satin Urethane finish and cut to Fender's Modern Deep C' profile, the playability of this guitar is simply outstanding and will not feel alien to keenFender players.

Adorned with a sleek Ebony fingerboard, this material ensures a slippery feel while adding some pristine top-end bite. Fitted with narrow tall frets, these are more akin to the type of frets you'd expect to find on most acoustics. But to keep electric players happy, Fender has ensured that the Acoustasonic Strathas 22 frets, with a 12 fingerboard radius and a sculpted heel providing a modern playing experience.

Using an electro-acoustic guitar onstage has its issues, where persistent feedback can potentially ruin a set. That's why Fender has sought to eliminate that common problem with itsAcoustasonic Strat, by utilising its smaller body shape and versatile Fender/Fishman-designed acoustic engine to cut out unwanted noise.

The acoustic engine is a proprietary blend of classic analogue and future technologies, optimising the guitar’s natural sound and modifying the resonance to deliver a curated collection of voices. These acoustic and electric voices can be used independently, or blended via the Mod knobto create experimental sounds. However, they can also be used simultaneously thanks to Fender's Acoustasonic Noiseless magnetic pickup.

Much better guitar than I thought it would be. I find acoustic guitars to be a bit too bulky but this is perfect and sounds great. Really pleased with it

A lovely guitar that far exceeds my skills, luckily my young son is far better than me and it has inspired us both. I think it's a great guitar if you don't want to carry more than one but arguably for the money it's better to 2 guitars. I just wanted one so I'm happy, and i now have the time to improve.

I'm not a pro musician so my opinions are qualified. I have never played this in a live situation or even through a stage amp but I would say the sounds aren't quite as spectacular as I had hoped for. That said it looks great and feels great and it does what I wanted if for well .... basically sofa noodling. I'll use it for recording (very amateur) in due course but I haven't tried that yet although I have played it through my USB interface / studio monitors and as I say the sounds aren't spectacular to my ears ... the acoustics aren't quite acoustic and the electrics aren't quite electric but I need to do a better test ... to date the plugged in sounds have been mixed (in my ears) with the rather thin (to be expected) acoustic sound coming from the box itself. I bought it blind based on reviews and I'm pretty happy with the guitar but if you're a pro/semipro you should give it a thorough test drive 'in the flesh' (which I guess you would do anyway). For amateur enthusiasts it's a lovely addition to the collection.

A really flexible instrument. Perhaps not for the purest, but for those that don't have the space for a large selection and/or want simplicity and choice in one item then this is it!

One of the highlights of NAMM 2019 was the launch of the American Acoustasonic Telecaster, a modernist design that proved a hit thanks to its combination of striking looks and performance geared towards the needs of the Instagram generation. Just as it did in the 1950s, hot on the heels of that oh-so-modern Telecaster comes an even sleeker sibling.

Just like the Tele version, the American Acoustasonic Stratocaster features a hollow mahogany body routed from two centre-joined sections that act as a frame (including the round-edged forearm chamfer and belly-cut), into which a transverse-braced Sitka spruce top is set, with the finish and purfling printed rather than sprayed onto it. Then there’s Fender’s eye-catching patented Stringed Instrument Resonance System (SIRS). This soundport extends into the body itself, an idea similar to the tornavoz that added depth to the sound of lightly built Antonio de Torres classical instruments of the 19th century.

Squier By Fender

Fender describes the profile of the mahogany neck as a Modern Deep C, a neck carve that debuted with the American Professional series in 2017. It feels full in the hand, though the thin open-pore satin urethane finish will split opinions. The 12-inch fretboard radius is a world away from a vintage Strat’s 7.25 inches, as is the ebony extension that allows for a 22nd fret.

The iconic solidbody Stratocaster design is beloved for its triple-pickup configuration and, with this Acoustasonic incarnation, we get a different take on that trifecta, with a Fishman undersaddle transducer and under-bridge body sensor, and a Fender Noiseless magnetic pickup at the bridge. It’s in the array of sonic options available that the Stratocaster differs most from its Telecaster stablemate, with a variety of voices modelled on acoustic s and three straight electric sounds. All the sounds are mono blends, so Y-cable stereo-blend shenanigans are off-limits.

Although comfortable against the body, the is a little neck-heavy, doubtless due to the hollow construction in conjunction with the Strat’s balance point. The 0.011 gauge acoustic strings coupled with the relatively slim neck width make for a playing experience that is neither acoustic nor electric – dedicated acoustic fingerstylists may find the string spacing a little tight, especially in deep open tunings,
