The three-way switch was a tone switch, and the small black switches were the pickup selectors. But most people nowadays want a easier and faster way of selecting pickups, hence the three-way, which affected the bridge and neck pickup.

I used the first small black switch for the middle pickup, and the other two as tone-switches. This all yields a wide variety of tonal options.
But chances are that they might come with a few issues, as they are old, they might not coop with all of todays modern stages, gear and whatever..
Besides picking up the string vibrations with the magnet, it also picks up sound with the coil-windings which will result in a heap of feedback and noise rather than the sweet licks you’re playing..

This is caused by air in and around the coil windings, as age makes them a little less tight than they once were.
These days most pickups are wax potted, though… But quite a few vintage units are unusable in a live setting. Wax potting those pups can be the big problem solver if you want to take your old Framus, Teisco or Guyatone up on stage
That one has the wiring wrapped around the magnet, but the left and middle have two magnets on each side of the coil.

Some of these old pickups have a DC inductance (or output, if you want to call it that) of 4 kOhm.. which is quite avarage for that period of time. But there are also pickups that range around the 8 kOhm, or even more..
Even when you have low output pickups in your guitar, they can still produce thunderous tones when wired in series as opposed to parallel.
This unconventional wiring will yield a lot more options for your tone, and even better when you’re bored of hearing yet another Strat or Les Paul…

The germanium powered fuzz was real gritty and dirty, but barely beyond unity gain, which was a bit of a bummer of course, and being germanium, room temperature and humidity will affect the tone.
How is that not vintage, you say? Well, they did a limited run of pedals for a well known London shop on Denmark street.. I believe JMI had something to do with this, but I am not quite sure.. Real nice dirty fuzz, very compressed and nasally, but the tone knob has quite a lot of range. Even for a remake it’s very well done.. Great components and good sound from the silicon trannies…
The black unit is a Wattson FY-2.. Copied of the Shin-Ei FY-2, which is the bother of the FY-6..better know as the SuperFuzz

The problem with the original FY-2 was that it’s output was not much higher than unity gain, where the FY-6 stepped it up of course, and became that much more popular.
The great folks at Wattson resolved that problem with a small build in booster, that can be switched off if you want to.. cause this thing is damn loud!
The 1987 Boss DS-1 is not quite vintage (yet) and the biggest problem is the label on the back.. Made in Taiwan instead of Japan, which makes about 200 buck of difference, apparently. But the thing that defines all the sound is the old, no longer in production, toshiba TA7136AP operational amplifier chip.. This is the sound these Boss pedals are supposed to have!

But there is more! The first three quarters of the dirt-knob gives you the well known vintage sharp drive of the MXR, which makes this a great copy, but the last 25% yields a fuzzy nastyness that you will not find in the MXR…
..and some flowers for the Mrs. ‘cause, as long as she isn’t inflatable, chances are that she will object to you bringing home an old dirty 135 Watt rock’n’roll-machine..
Although she could benefit of new power tubes, caps, reverb drive transformer, tolex, grill cloth, logo…..okay, she needs a whole lot of love, I guess.

It isn’t the drive and dirt that you may have hoped for, since it more like a cranked Fender Champ, but there are many simple mods to enhance and satisfy your dirty needs.
Another mod is pulling the first 12AX7/ECC83 from the normal channel, which makes the vibrato channel louder, to push the 12AX7 in the gain section of the vibrato channel..
The biggest problem being the reverb, which won’t work.. rather tricky, as it could be anything, and I am not an amp-tech.

As far as I can tell, it has had some tech looked over it in the past.. there is a new reverb tank, and a few 12AX7’s are swapped out for Marshall’s ECC83’s
The back had let go of the sides, binding was missing, pickups were dead as fried chicken and the electronics could not be saved either.
The guitar looks quite similar to the “three string transwonder” of Seasick Steve, as per body shape & control plate but not quite the same.

A new bone nut, that I cut a little higher than usual, and with the small frets it’s perfect for slide guitar.
The body has no center block, just a small pillar-like piece under the bridge, so she doesn’t have tons of sustain, but with the toaster pickups she’s full of bass.
The neck pickup produces sweet jazzy bell-like cleans, as the bridge pickup gives you thin shimmering surf sounds, which leads to some interesting tones all together.

What’s also different in comparison to a Jazzmaster, is it’s weight.. the body is slightly thinner, and thus, saves you some shoulder problems at the end of the night
