Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) arranged for classical or fingerstyle guitar. A somewhat simple guitar arrangement in drop D tuning around the Intermediate (Grade 5) level. This has been arranged for use in weddings and gigs or for students. Pachelbel's Canon Rock
Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) was a German composer, organist, and teacher. He never composed for lute or Baroque guitar but certainly would have been familiar with the high level Baroque lutenists so active in German at the time. He composed a large body of sacred and secular music, and his contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue have earned him a place among the most important composers of the middle Baroque era.
Pachelbel’s Canon is the common name for an accompanied canon in his Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo (German: Kanon und Gigue für 3 Violinen mit Generalbaß) (PWC 37, T. 337, PC 358), sometimes referred to as Canon and Gigue in D or Canon in D. Neither the date nor the circumstances of its composition are known (suggested dates range from 1680 to 1706), and the oldest surviving manuscript copy of the piece dates from the 19th century.
Here’s the first page of the original organ score. The canon was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue. Both movements are in the key of D major. Although a true canon at the unison in three parts, it also has elements of a chaconne. You’ve found the free sheet music and TAB for Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel. Canon In D: Johann Pachelbel Arr. By Lemontart
The “Canon in D Craze” seems to have started in 1968. This was most likely due to a recording by french conductor Jean-François Paillard. The piece was obscure for some time before that recording. After Paillard's recording, the piece featured in movies, TV, and radio. Since then, it has become associated with weddings and other festive events.
The original format is for three violins, and basso continuo ( which means an improvised part). Today we have many arrangements for both solo instruments and chamber music ensembles. We now find Canon in D arranged for piano solo, oboe, guitar solo, flute, and other instruments.

This famous piece is an absolute joy to play and it will pique the interest of any music lover. The beautiful melody and catchy bass line ensure its popularity will continue. Enjoy this arrangement (and guitar TAB) of Pachelbel’s Canon in D!

I have lost my entire metallic sound while I am playing now. Even my single note practice sounds more melodious, less tinny. [The Woodshed technique practice] has made a major difference in my tone. Thank you. ~ Harlan Friedman -Harlan Friedman
I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two other stellar teachers – one focused on the technical movements, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully.

Allen Mathews was recommended to me as somebody who could help me expand my guitar vocabulary. Allen started me on a really fun cycle of lessons and practice. He is a very good, and very enthusiastic teacher, and I feel that I'm on the road to learning. I couldn't be more pleased with my experience. ~ Peter Buck (r.e.m.) -Peter Buck (r.e.m.)
