Chords are the “language of guitar”. Every style of guitar uses them, including classical guitar. Below are three of the most common. Many people think chords are just for folk music. But in fact, these three chords are as common in Bach and Beethoven as they are in any other style. Chords are part of guitar, and one of your highest-leverage practice areas.

The goal when sight-reading is to keep going. When you’re learning a piece of music, you’ll use a different process. Then you’ll want to go slow and minimize mistakes. But when sight-reading, it’s more important to keep your eyes moving forward.

Sight-reading is a skill that will help you to learn guitar music quickly and easily, just as having good right-hand technique will help you to play pieces more fluidly.

These exercises will help you develop a strategic process for sight-reading on the classical guitar. Soon enough, you’ll be able to use this process to sight-read classical guitar sheet music and songs of your choosing.

Eventually you’ll be able to sight-read on all of the guitar strings, in all positions. However, if you’re just beginning guitar or new to sight-reading, it’s important to start slow.

You will likely be tempted to stop before the end of the video. Keep going! If you get off, just take a deep breath, find an upcoming note, and jump back into the game. When you push play, commit to the ~3 minutes of sight-reading practice, and finish it, regardless of how many notes you miss.

As an alternative, practice with the video for one minute, then pause it. Practice something else. A few minutes later, come back for another minute. Then once more later in your practice. This is called “interleaving”, and is wonderful for learning. Moral of the story is: if you start to lose focus, put it down for a bit, come back and watch later.

In this video you’ll go through one of the most productive practice sessions possible for you. You’ll spend just a minute on each of the four practice areas, rotating between the different parts.

It’s normal to feel challenge on these. You may not fully “get” each area before moving on. This may feel a little frustrating at times, but it’s been proven to help you learn faster, and retain what you learn for longer.

So the goal is just to stay focused and keep going. If you don’t master the material, that’s fine. Instead, focused attention is the metric for success here.

Unlike your average classical guitar lesson, you can practice along with this video as many time per day as you like. Multiple short practices are better than one big practice (though any practice is great).

Grids are used for chords, which you should certainly start on as soon as you can. See here for more on chords. You can also find a printable chord sheet below on this page.

Guitar takes time and repetition. Increase your chances of success by setting a routine. Make it easier on yourself by making it easy to pick up the guitar and practice:

Time – Is there a consistent time you can practice each day? If so, great! Make it a habit by linking practice with whatever comes just before it. For example: “After breakfast, I pick up the guitar.”

Place – Keep everything you need in one place. Ideally, you practice away from distraction. So close the door and set the phone to airplane mode. Set a timer so you don’t have to watch the clock. And remove anything distracting from in front of you. The goal is to focus for a few minutes, so anything that may get in the way, handle it.

As most classical guitar instructors will tell you, learning classical guitar requires steady and deliberate effort. Work a bit each day to build healthy habits and force out any bad habits.

The best way to learn is with small, focus-intensive practice intervals every day. Embrace the long-haul process that is your classical guitar journey.

And above all, make success easy. Just one minute of practice counts as a successful practice day. The goal is to have as many successful practice days as possible. So set the bar low – just pick up the guitar and do something – anything. And you win for the day! Then tomorrow, do it again.

I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two other stellar teachers – one focused on the technical movements, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully.

The Beginner Classical Guitar Method

These warm-up and stretching exercises are helping me a lot! Because I’m a software developer I have to stay 8 hours typing on a computer keyboard, so I use my hands a lot during the day. At night, when I have some time to practice the guitar my hands and arms are usually in pain because they have been working a lot during the day, but I’ve found that doing the warm-up/stretching exercises in The Woodshed releases me from this pain and I’m then able to practice after doing them. You are building a very interesting and working guitar course, because for what I’ve seen so far it really works! ~ Ulysses Alexandre Alves -Ulysses Alexandre AlvesWhen you first learn to play guitar you may be faced with the decision on which of the two popular non-electric types of instruments to start out with. We’ll call this choice… Classical vs Acoustic guitar.

I’ve found that many students don’t know the difference between the classical and acoustic.  In fact many just believe that they are just synonyms for each other or that the acoustic guitar is the classical guitar and vice versa.

On one hand they are both actually “acoustic” guitars.  “Acoustic simply means a sound that is produced within the body of the guitar without the use of electricity”.

In practice they have come to refer to two different types of guitars. So then what is the difference between them and which is best for beginners?

To start off let’s answer the question “what is a classical guitar?”. Well there are two distinguishing factors distinguishing the classical vs acoustic guitar.

For this reason the acoustic guitar is frequently referred to as a steel string guitar, whereas the classical is referred to as nylon string guitar.

Nylon stringed guitars are very light and built with woods to emphasize resonance.  These guitars cannot handle the pressure that the steel strings would exert on them.

Don’t put steel strings on a Classical guitar. Because the neck is not reinforced with a truss rod it is likely to cause the neck to bow over time.

Acoustic guitars,  frequently referred as a Folk, Dreadnought, Steel String or even sometimes referred to as just “the Acoustic”, are designed to be used with steel strings.
