I got a set of pickups for a standard Tele recently. They are in great condition and don't even have any scratches. Preamp and pots are also in great shape. But, the selector switch needs to be replaced, and the pickup wires are not connected to the switch. I assume that a standard Tele 3 way switch is what I need, just wondering if anyone has a diagram to get these puppies wired. But first, I need to get a Tele to put them in. Kind of like buying wheels and then getting a car for them. I'm probably going to find a nice MIM Fender or G&L tribute ASAT.
I recently did this with a relatively new American Standard Tele. It's a nice guitar with a light ash body, 60's slim neck, and tummy and elbow cuts like on a Strat. I'm out of town until next week, but if you don't have a answer by then, I can crack it open and take a pic for you.

Got everything together last night. I ended up talking with Mica and Ron - what nice folks! I sent her a diagram of what I thought the switching would be, and I was right. Ron just said to keep the shielding from the pickup separate from the ground on the output jack. I have attached the diagram if anyone needs to do this setup and you don't have the factory blade switch.

Now for the guitar. I found a Tele here in Nashville (locals can LOL - this is one of the most popular guitars around here for some reason). It's a mutt from mixed parents. The body is probably Mexican, but possibly USA - there were no marks in the neck pocket or under the pickups. It's in near mint condition and a classic Tele yellow. The neck is a warmoth vintage, thin w/ jumbo frets, and a rosewood board. The finish was not very well done, so I sanded it down to bare wood and did 6 coats of Tru-oil followed by carnauba wax. Feels awesome! Gotoh tuners, a Joe Barden bridge, and Schaller strap locks rounds out the package. Because it had a P-90 neck pickup, I had to get a new pickguard - black three ply.
The activators fit perfectly except the bridge pickup area required a little wood/paint removal in one corner. Thank you mister Dremel and cylindrical mill tool. The wiring is nice and neat. I shielded the control compartment with copper foil that has the conductive adhesive. I tied the bridge ground to this and it does not go into the jack area.
It was a cool feeling to plug her in and everything work. The sound was truly amazing. So clear and clean. Even bass to treble. The bridge pickup by itself is a little much for me, very heavy on the treble, but the combined pickups and the neck by itself is awesome. Very hi-fi like it's been said before. I'm probably going to change the wiring to a blend pot in the near future to dial in the sounds differently. If anyone wants to figure this one out, let me know :o)
Starfire Tinkering Continued
Due to some clearance issues, I redid the switching to two mini switches because the preamp was being squished between the battery and control panel. I made a really cool stainless control panel. I wanted to do a brass plate, but I could not find any locally. The final setup and playability with the pickups is awesome. The only issue I'm having is getting a good distortion sound. I have a Fender Hot Rod Deville and get some great sounds with my Anderson Strat, G&L Tribute, and Fender Lead II, so it's not the amp. But the clean sounds are really cool and totally different from my other guitars. Here's a few pics.
I dealt with the real estate problem by swapping the volume and filter positions on my ized Tele. The two mini toggles look sharp!I would like to build a 5 pin cable. I found where to order the Neutrik female 5 pin right angle connector and Male 5 pin. Now I am not sure what type of cable to order( I looked on my cable from and it reads Belden 1192A) but when I tried to order it, it was nowhere to be found. Can someone out there please tell me where to order the cable I need ?...And what the cable is called. Lastly, does anyone have photos on connecting the Neutriks up to the cables? Thanks all!! I'd like to build a 60' 5 pin cable!!!!
What you are looking for is Star-Quad microphone cable. I like Canare L-4E6S. It has a braided shield like the Belden 1192A but is more flexible. You can find both by the foot at Markertek.

For wiring I just ensure that the same wire goes to the same terminal on both ends and that the shield goes to pin 1 and the ground lug.
My suggestion would be Mogami cable. Mogami makes high end cables for recording studios and also sells their wire in bulk. They make some real nice instrument cables, too. Pretty sure you need to get balanced microphone cable. Good chance others will chime in with more suggestions/info. Good luck!
Chalie, I took Keith's advice when I was building my spare cable for my Europa & went with the Canare L-4E6S. I got mine from New York Pro Audio on Ebay for $11/10'. I bought 20', so it was $22 & came as one full 20' length of cable. Here is the link -

The Canare is much more flexible than the standard cable. I roll mine up into a 4 coil to fit inside my case with no problem. My situation was the opposite of yours though, I wanted a shorter cable than the one the bass came with. I'm rarely more than 10' from my amp at the small venues we play, so I wanted a shorter cable. The Canare comes in colors too, so of course I had to get blue to match my Blue Orca!
Here's the wiring diagram, the Canare is a 4 conductor cable with a shield, so you use the shield as the ground -
Not sure why my links aren't active on my post, but you can copy & paste them into a new browser page & they work.
Alembic Series Ii Bass Short Scale Zebrawood Like Stanley Clarke $39k.list.
We make 100' cables for Stanley Clarke - so 60' should be no problem. We prefer the Belden 8424 but it's difficult to get in the boot of the connector. We're using it now. I've also like the Gotham Audio Star Quad cable, but it's a little delicate for the way most people (and techs) handle it.
I've been looking for a good option to combine in ears and the 5 pin in one cable. Maybe two channel Star Quad snake cable....

The Belden 8424 looks like a great option. Nice fat wires at 20 ga. Most star quad is 1/2 24 gauge at best. I might get some for my next build.

Thanks guys! I'm torn between building it myself or having the mothership hook it up. Mica, how much would charge to do this?
Just received the 60' red cable and Neutrik connectors, but man how do you tell which white wire from the other white and blue from the blue when trying to solder?!!
Ah!!Simple..yet effective..sniff..sniff..I love you man!...Yet one more question (after this statement) obviously I do not have an electrician's skill, but I'm not afraid to try basic stuff and I do not know what some things are called so...looking at the color photo of the 5pin wiring, what are those little clips called that connect to the pins? I need to purchase some. Thanks!!

I was too busy playing my guitar and bass. So..in laymen's terms (with 1st grade drawings) how do I hook up the 4 wires to the 5 plugs? Stumpo da bassman
Those aren't little clips. The wires are soldered into the cup. What you see in the picture looks to be heat shrink tubing used to reinforce the wire and insulate the connectors. The same thing could be done with plastic tubing. I don't bother with any of it as the connections don't get stressed due to the strain relief built into the connector housing.
What Keith said. Using heat shrink to reinforce the connections is great, but I never do it, most people don't. Maybe I should, but I treat my cables pretty well. It's just like to do it absolutely perfectly.
John Mcvie: Prototype 1976 Alembic Series 1 Graphite Neck Through Electric Bass Guitar
Make very sure that you have each pin going to its corresponding pin (1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc.). It doesn't much matter which wire you use for which pin, although pin 1 should be the shield, as long as you are consistent. You don't want to mix up the power supply voltage with the signal. On one connector, the pins go 1-5 left to right and it's the opposite on the other.
Chalie, what Edwin said is exactly what I did. Pin 1
