The meme is somewhat misleading because these styles of music do in fact use major and minor chords, but they are not approached as a default choice the way you would in rock. Usually the majors and minors are expressed in tones of maj7, m7, maj9, m9, 9, and countless other ones, but lets stay right in this neighborhood for right now:

As chord progressions go, this one is ripe for emotional deliveries because of its romantic ( as in the art movement, not the word for amorous ) composition. Jazz chords are liberating in the same way that more crayon colors are liberating; it is a freedom through choices. Since it’s hard sometimes to find voicings that cover the root, third, fifth and an added color note (or two), it’s ok to replace notes. No need to turn your hand into a pretzel.
