How To Make Midi

A few of the tabs here can be heard on the YouTube Channel showcasing old recordings from the member of the Tape 'n' Tab Club (T'n'T) which were originally recoded on cassestte tapes - take a listen to the various play-lists here:

Tablature is an excellent way in which to put guitar compositions and arrangements onto paper for learning and teaching purposes, and also to enable you to remember tunes from one year to the next, a definite factor if a tune isn't played for a year or two, especially as one gets a little older. But, why is tab so good ??

It is an excellent medium because it shows exactly where to place your fingers to find the notes and these finger placements are often the best way to find the notes to make the movement of your fretting hand the easiest and simplest as well as the most economical and efficient. One of the major complaints about tablature used to be that it didn't show any timing value so you had to have heard the tune first before you could use the 'finger-map' of the tablature to play it. This is true NO MORE !! The newer software programs for computers allow you to enter tablature and have the timing printed along with the tab. Some, such as TablEdit, will even play back the tablature for you on the computer so that you can hear how the tune goes before you attempt to play it. Tablature usage has never been easier or more approachable.

One of the other major advantages of tablature is in the use of altered and open tunings on the guitar (for tunings see here: https:///guitar/tunings.htm). Using normal/conventional music notation, every time you change the tuning on your guitar you then have to re-learn the notes on the fingerboard to be able to find them when they are being read from the dots on the printed page. Tablature is no different no matter what the tuning; it still shows the fret numbers which show where you are to put your fingers of your fretting hand (left for most of us!) onto the guitar neck/fretboard. A real advantage !!

Have a go with the tablature. Download TablEdit from the site as shown above (it is free in a Demo form, and there is also a free file viewer/player/printer called TefView available from the TablEdit website, both of which which will play all of the more than 6, 000 tabs on the site, including all those shown here), and try for yourself. Some tunes are for advanced players but a lot are for beginners, or intermediate players. If you have never played before, give it a try - if you painted by numbers when you were a kid, you can play guitar, after a bit of effort and practice, from numbers now !!

A few simple / easy tunes are provided below for absolute beginners. Please do not try to rush these tunes - if you are just starting out you need to take things slowly and make sure you have got it right. Firstly, work through the tune by sight and work out the chords that are needed; mark them in on the tablature, in pencil, above where the changes occur. TablEdit (or the 'free' TefView) helps in this respect as it can play the tablature for you over your computer speakers so that you can hear how the tune goes and where the chords change before you try to play it on your guitar. Then, later, you can play along with it. This is a big help - Good luck ! Have fun !!
