The B chord is the bane of the beginning guitarists existence. Typically, when you start learning guitar, you learn your basic C, A, G, E, D chords. Otherwise known as “cowboy chords”. They are easy to form for beginners, unlike the B chord.
The B chord is generally, a young player’s first foray into the wonderful world of barre chords. A barre chord is simply when you use one finger (usually your index finger) to fret multiple strings at once while making the chord shape with your remaining fingers.

The above B chord is the most common version. However, you can play it on various sections of the guitar neck. In fact, some of these positions may be easier to play.

In this diagram, you use the E-chord shape while barring on the 7th fret. The proper formation for this version is with your:
As you may already know, the B chord is made up using notes from the B major scale. The major chord is made up of the I, III, and V notes on the major scale.
Using the above diagram, you can see where the notes of the B major scale fall in sequence. So the I, or the root note, is a B. The III, or 3rd, is a D#, and the V, or 5th, is an F#.

As wonderful as a single chord may sound, it isn’t much fun to just strum one chord. You will probably want to play some other chords along with it.
A fun thing to do is just pick a progression using the numbers of the scale. For example, an incredibly common chord progression in pop and rock music is the I – V – vi – IV progression. Translated to the B major scale would be B – F# – G#m – E.
Note: Anytime you see the scale numbers in lower case (eg: vi Vs VI) it means you play a minor version of that chord.

If you want to add a little flavor to your B chord, you can also play a B7, Bm, or a Bm7. Now, a Bm or Bm7 will not sound great with all the of the same chords as a B or B7, but it can give you something fun to play around with and practice your transitions.
Hopefully, you found this helpful. The B chord can be a difficult chord to learn. But as we said earlier, its generally the gateway into barre chords which opens up a whole new world of playing possibilities.
Hi, I am Justin. I have been playing guitar since the age of 13. I have taught lessons and recorded and released music both with bands and solo. Music has been a huge part of my life and my goal is to help others on their guitar journey.Ok, before we look at the easier alternatives let’s see how the B guitar chord should ideally be played (note that the full name of B is actually “B Major”, but most people just refer to it as “B”):

I’ve learnt through thousands of hours of teaching that the B guitar chord is simply out of reach for beginner guitarists. We need an alternative; a different version of B that you can use as a stepping stone to develop your finger dexterity and accuracy.
As you can see this is a much easier version of the B guitar chord, though it’s still a little tricky for total beginners because it requires 3 fingers. Stick with it! This is the best version of the B guitar chord for beginners to learn.
B Major Scale: What Is It And How To Play It On Guitar
Let’s look at a 2-finger version of the B guitar chord. (This is easier to play than B7 but doesn’t sound as good, so it doesn’t win my overall recommendation.)

This is a great version of the B guitar chord for beginners to use. Even though it doesn’t sound as good as a full B major chord, or as strong as a B7, it does contain the all-important B root note and is a
Once you have 10-15 hours of guitar playing under your belt you should look to ‘upgrade’ from Bm11 and play B7 instead.
B Minor Guitar Scale
This version of the B guitar chord sounds a little thin (it’s bound to, of course, as you’re only using half of the strings), but it’s still a valid B major chord and is ideal for children’s smaller hands and adults who are struggling to play the other versions of B.
This loose-sounding B guitar chord is called Bsus4 (which is short for “B suspended fourth”). It’s a wonderful chord for acoustic guitars and creates a light, free sound.

Despite its common use in Pop songs, there are no practical ways to play the B chord as an open chord. It is therefore played very commonly as a bar chord in the second fret.
Key Of B Guitar Notes
The most common way to play the B chord is with the root note on the second fret of the fifth string. This is almost the same as the root-5 barre chord shape for B, but in this example, the first finger only plays the bass note and does not extend down to form the ‘barre’.
The easiest version of the B chord is the three-note triad, played on the first three strings of the guitar. Learning the easy B shape can be useful if you’re just starting out and need to play B for a song that you’re learning. Often, by learning these easy versions, you can get by until you learn the more common (but harder) shapes.

The instructions above are step by step instructions for playing the easy B Major chord shape. These instructions can actually be super helpful when you feel like you’re interpreting the shape incorrectly. By going through the B chord instructions step by step, you can verify that you’re playing the chord correctly.

The B chord can be played as a barre chord by playing a root 6 barre chord shape and starting on the 7
Most of the time, when we play the B chord, we play the standard shapes, such as the open position B and the barre chord shapes. However, learning the strict root position and inverted triads is a great way of exploring subtle and interesting variations that exist across the fretboard. The B Major triad can be voiced in the following three ways:
The following shapes are alternative ways of playing the B Major chord shape. They’re not the most common B shapes, but used enough to include here as interesting alternatives.

The B chord can often be substituted with the B sus 4 chord, the B sus 2 chord and the B add 9 chord. The B chord can also be used itself as a substitute for more complicated chords, such as the B Major 7 chord, the B7 chord, and other extension chords which have B as the root note (it can’t be used in place of minor chords though!).
The most common and effective scales that can be used to solo/improvise over the B Major chord, or to create melodies for the purposes of song writing are:The symbol “Bm”, or Bm guitar chord is an abbreviated way to write the B minor chord. This is a simple minor chord, also known as a minor triad, the B minor chord notes consist of three notes… the B note, the D note and the F# note.
It’s often considered hard to play on the guitar because the most common form involves using a bar with your first finger across all the strings of the guitar. However, it is possible to play the Bm chord without a bar.

Using Slash Chords On Guitar
This would depend on the situation. In most cases, it would be best to play a simpler version of the Bm (either the 3 finger or 4 finger form) if difficulty were the issue. It is possible in some cases to substitute a D major chord in place of the B minor chord.
Yes… I often teach students what I call the 3 finger version. It’s not only easier that but is useful in some cases even if they can play the more difficult forms.
For most beginners playing on an acoustic guitar I recommend the 4 finger form (see below). It is much easier than the bar chord version, yet still sounds quite good.
The B Dominant 7th Chord
Sometimes I find it best to start with the 3 finger version (see below) if the student is having a particularly difficult time with fingering chords. Occasionally I’ll have a student jump in and start with the bar chord version if they are already able to play bar chords. For those who are comfortable with bar chords it’s actually easier to play the Bm that way.
B Major is a simple major chord, also known as a major triad, composed of three notes…
