The G minor chord is a very popular chord on the guitar. The chord actually contains two notes that can be played on open strings (G and D), which means that you can technically play the Gm chord as an open chord (see the first shape in the image below). However, the open version of Gm is somewhat awkward, and almost never used. Instead, Playing Gm as a bar chord on the 3

The most common way to play the G minor chord is as a root-6 minor barre chord, starting in the third fret.

The ‘easy’ or ‘mini’ version of the G minor chord is achieved by playing the first three strings of the guitar, all in the third fret. This can be used as an easy alternative to the more difficult barre chord shape (pictured above).

How To Play G Minor

The instructions above are step by step instructions for playing the common G minor chord shape. Forming the chord through step by step instructions is a great way of ensuring that you are interpreting the chord diagram correctly.

The Gm chord can be played as a barre chord by playing a root 6 barre chord shape and starting on the 3rd fret or by playing a root 5 barre chord Major shape and starting on the 10th fret:

Playing triads is a great way of exploring the minor chord and the guitar fretboard more generally. By arranging the notes of the chord systematically using permutations (root position, first inversion, second inversion), interesting and unique shapes and voicings are created. How To Play A G Minor Chord On The Guitar.

The following shapes are alternative ways of playing the G minor chord shape. They’re not the most common Gm shapes, but used enough to include here as interesting alternatives.

Most G minor chords with extensions can be used as a substitute for the G minor chord. For example, Gm9, Gm11 and Gm6 can often be used to add colour and emotion to the G minor chord.

For more interesting substitutions, playing variations of the Bb chord (which is the relative Major of G minor), such as Bb6, Bb69, Bbmaj9 etc. can be used effectively as a substitute for the G minor chord.

The most common and effective scales that can be used to solo/improvise over the G minor chord, or to create melodies for the purposes of song writing are:The G minor guitar chord, usually written as “Gm”, is one of the least common minor guitar chords. I always tell my students that although it doesn’t appear too often it’s still a good chord to know because it sounds so cool.

Barred guitar chords like this are too difficult for beginner guitarists to play, so let’s look at some easier ways to play a G minor guitar chord instead.

How To Play G Minor Em Chord On Guitar, Ukulele And Piano

This is easier to play than a standard G minor guitar chord, but you will still find it tough to play. Make sure you don’t play strings 5 & 6 when strumming this version of G minor. (String numbers are explained here.)

As you can see this is a much easier version the Gm guitar chord than the others! This Gm chord is well suited to people who are very early in their guitar journey.

How

The only issue with this version of the G minor guitar chord is that it sounds a little thin. That’s the trade off we’re making here; we’re sacrificing the quality of a well-rounded and full G minor for the playability of this simple 3-string version of G minor chord.

How To Play Gm On Bass Guitar

Be sure to skip strings 1 & 2 when playing this chord or it won’t sound right (as it will no longer be a Gm chord if you play them). This version of the Gm guitar chord gives us a deeper and more melancholy tone and is a handy one to have in your locker. (But honestly, most of the time you’ll be better using the previous version.)

Think of these easy versions of the G minor guitar chord as stepping stones; chords you’ll play while you develop as a guitarist and improve your finger-control and dexterity to the point where you can play the full version of G minor guitar chord.

You need to decide which one of these easier chords works best for the piece of music you are playing and also suits your current ability level. They will all do the job, so take your pick and enjoy playing these different G minor guitar chords. You’ll be rocking away like a madman in no time at all! 🙂

You can use a capo to make a difficult piece of music easy. For example, if you put a capo on the 3rd fret and play an Em chord, the sound that comes out of the guitar will be Gm. Give it a try!

The capo simply does the job your finger is doing when you barre strings. It’s raising the key of the guitar which means you can play different (and easier) chords shapes to get the same result. Don’t be afraid of experimenting with a capo, it’s a beginner guitarist’s best friend!
