Zur Höchstform läuft Guitar Hero am Fernseher auf – entweder über die eigenständige App für das neue Apple TV oder dann, wenn man Bild und Ton von iPhone oder iPad aus per Lightning-Digital-AV-Adapter und HDMI-Kabel überträgt.

Das Spiel splittet sich in zwei eigenständige Modi. Beide Varianten setzen dabei im Kern auf bekanntes sowie bewährtes Gameplay: Im Kern gilt es, die währendes des Spiels auf einer Art Fließband auf einen zulaufenden Tastenkombination im richtigen Augenblick auf dem Controller zu drücken. Der Hintergrund wird dabei nicht mehr in schnöder Computergrafik dargestellt. Stattdessen setzt man auf aus der Egoperspektive der Musiker gedrehte Videos – so ist man wortwörtlich mittendrin statt nur dabei! Im Live-Modus stehen dabei rund 40 Songs bereit. Die Auswahl an Titeln allerdings ist durchwachsen. Was etwa Skrillex mit seinem Dubstep in der auch darüber hinaus etwas zu Mainstream-konformen Tracklist verloren hat, wissen vermutlich nur die Marketing-Leute des Publishers.

Der zweite Spielmodus nennt sich Guitar Hero TV, kurz GHTV. Dieser bedient sich einer mehr als 200 Songs starken Musikbibliothek. Statt generischer Videos aus der Egoperspektive, bilden hier Musikvideos den visuellen Rahmen. Mit Titeln von Pantera, ZZ Top und Rage Against The Machine findet sich hier zwischen vielen Top-40-Standards dann auch genau die Art von Musik, die einem gitarrenlastigen Spiel gut zu Gesicht steht. Doch GHTV hat einen Haken: Der unmittelbare Zugriff auf alle Songs ist nur bedingt möglich. Das kostenlose Angebot von GHTV beschränkt sich auf zwei Streams, in denen die Titel der üppig bestückten Bibliothek ohne Wahlmöglichkeiten gestreamt werden. Wer die eigenen Lieblingssongs direkt spielen will, wird mit einem undurchsichtigen Mix aus erspielter In-Game-Währung und In-App-Käufen konfrontiert – wer die freie Songwahl schätzt, wird schnell zur Kasse gebeten.
