FRANKLIN – The aha! moment for Bill Warmoth was realizing that Middle Tennessee, with its plethora of guitar stores, didn't have a single shop offering only handmade guitars.
But while researching and ordering his first custom guitar in 2003, he was underwhelmed with the lack of local inventory of handcrafted guitars by small builders, and sales associates equipped only with slivers of information about them.

He chatted up out-of-state luthiers to get the esoteric detail he sought on how to achieve specific types of tone and resonance with certain woods and building techniques.
Can Anyone Tell Me About My Artisan Guitar
By the time his precisely built ax arrived in December 2003, Warmoth was so convinced of the local handmade instrument deficit that he already had ordered 26 heirloom quality guitars from several small builders and opened Artisan Guitars in The Factory at Franklin in January 2004.
It was a risk, to be sure, as he was equipped only with the knowledge he recently had learned about fine guitars while shopping for one. One thing he did understand was customer service because that had been his job for 30 years in the luxury car business, working with brands such as Ferrari and Porsche.
He found great similarities in calling on fine guitar makers for custom work and ensuring his customers received the royal treatment every step of the way.

Today, Warmoth and his wife and co-founder, Ellie, are celebrating the 10th anniversary of Artisan Guitars, which boasts one of the world's largest inventories and sales of handmade, small builder guitars, according to luthiers for the six core brands the store carries.
The store typically keeps 275 guitars in stock, mostly acoustic with one room dedicated to electrics, generally ranging from $3, 300 to $20, 000. It also carries three dozen ukuleles and mandolins, and custom designs and orders instruments by request.
I think when we first started, in the eyes of some of the journeymen, if they are willing to admit it, they thought we had lost our minds, Warmoth said. With all the guitar stores in Nashville, especially with people as inexperienced as my wife and I, they just thought it was a foolish idea.
Huss & Dalton Guitar Company
Luthier Joe Glaser was one of them. He's widely known for his 35 years of guitar building and repair expertise, attracting celebrities and top musicians to his shop, Glaser Instruments in Berry Hill.
I remember thinking there is no way in the world these guys will be successful; they don't stand a chance, Glaser said.
They're off in the middle of nowhere, there's already plenty of guitar shops and nobody here buys expensive guitars. I wouldn't have bet $3 they would have been in business two years later.

Glaser couldn't be happier to have been wrong. Not only because he gets repairs from the shop, but because the store handles exactly the type of instruments he's into — high quality.
I love the fact that they made it, Glaser said. They pick nice guitars, they have great customer service, and they carry great brands.

Before long it developed a Nashville following. It got a boost last year from Brad Paisley listing Artisan as one of his three favorite Nashville destinations in a Parade magazine article.

Warmoth talks passionately about hand-selected, high-grade woods, natural tone qualities of select woods, progressive bracing designs and specialized luthier techniques that can take into account the tiniest details and many months to handcraft a single guitar.
For instance Collings Guitars, played by Lyle Lovett, Pete Townsend and Joni Mitchell, produces only about 2, 950 guitars per year, said Austin-based Collings spokesman Alex Rueb.
Compare that to Taylor Guitars, which produces nearly that many in two weeks, according to Michael John Simmons' book, Taylor Guitars: 30 Years of a New American Classic.

We are the No. 1 dealer on the planet for some of these brands, and it's remarkable when you look outside Middle Tennessee and realize the broad fan base these builders have all over the world, Warmoth said.
If you visited London, Tokyo or Paris, and I have, they remain underrepresented in those areas. You might have six Collings at the most to choose from in a store, and a sea of Martins and plenty of Taylors.

Some people fly here from all over the world, Australia, Italy, Germany, Japan, South Korea, specifically to come to Artisan Guitars, Warmoth said.
Artisan Guitar Show
Collings makes close to 100 instrument models and then there are many more iterations of different models, and Artisan Guitars is a great place to try out all the different models, Rueb said. They have pretty much all of our models represented most of the time, and they are a full service shop that does a good job of taking care of our customers. If you've ever seen Tommy Emmanuel perform you will know he is one of the world's greatest guitarists, and one of the most inspirational musicians on the planet.
It takes a great guitar to meet the demands of such a great player. Designed in collaboration with Tommy Emmanuel, the TE series guitars are an outstanding tribute to Tommy's musicianship and Maton's superior craftsmanship. Built to Tommy's specifications, the TE series provides the huge tone and performance you would expect from a guitar bearing his name.
Tommy looks for a guitar with superb tone, capable of the most delicate expression as well as the most ferocious attack. The neck must stay true regardless of the rigors of international travel and the guitar needs to perform at its peak, from Rome to Nashville, to Sydney!

The Tommy Emmanuel models feature a Mother of Pearl block inlay on the 12th Fret, engraved with C.G.P. The acronym stands for Certified Guitar Player, a title bestowed on Tommy by Chet Atkins and held by only 3 other guitarists in the world - John Knowles, Jerry Reed, and Steve Wariner.
The Maton EBG-808-TE bears an light aging toner on the AAA Grade Sitka Spruce top. A light Vintage Amber stain on the Queensland Maple back, sides, and neck could easily be mistaken as Mahogany.

A rain forest hardwood from Northern Queensland, this timber is light, strong, and visually striking. Queensland Maple, while originally used as a Mahogany substitute, is extremely well balanced with an even response across all frequencies. If you are looking for the secret to Maton's great tone, this is a good place to start.

The proprietary Maton 808 body shape is similar, though slightly smaller that the US OM Model. However, the body depth of the 808 is substantially deeper at 4-7/8. This is significant, as moving the top and back further apart enhances the bass element within the tonal character of the voicing (bracing technique), complimenting the different wood combinations
In its 5th generation, the AP5 Pro features an internal Microphone and 6-Piezo bridge input, with controls that allow for blending of both microphone and piezo levels prior to sending the actively combined signals through the well engineered pre-amp.
The highly selective cardioid microphone system allows for much greater microphone level before feedback in live environments. This upgraded AP5-Pro microphone is direct mounted to the pre-amp casing with an adjustable arm, which permits easy final tweaking of microphone position to suit the individual artist's playing style.

Using the ‘Sweep-able Mid’ controls. Mid-range is sweep-able from 600Hz to 2.4kHz and can be cut or boosted within this range. As a general rule we start out with all settings ‘flat’ then alter them to achieve the desired tone & presence based on the venue or recording environment. For example, an open, natural sound can be achieved by setting the frequency control at 1.4khz and the boost/cut control at 5db. Alternatively, for a ‘thick’ lead sound boost your mid's by 5db and set the frequency dial at 1.7kh.
