The major scale (or Ionian mode) is one of the most commonly used musical scales, especially in Western music. It is one of the diatonic scales. Like many musical scales, it is made up of sev notes: the eighth duplicates the first at double its frequcy so that it is called a higher octave of the same note (from Latin octavus, the eighth).

The intervals from the tonic (keynote) in an upward direction to the second, to the third, to the sixth, and to the sevth scale degrees of a major scale are called major.[1]

Twelve Bar Blues

Where whole stands for a whole tone (a red u-shaped curve in the figure), and half stands for a semitone (a red angled line in the figure).

Whole steps and half steps are explained mathematically in a related article, Twelfth root of two. Notably, an equal-tempered octave has twelve half steps (semitones) spaced equally in terms of the sound frequcy ratio. The sound frequcy doubles for corresponding notes from one octave to the next. The ratio is 3/2 = 1.5 for a perfect fifth, for example from C to G on a major scale, and 5/4 = 1.25 for a major third, for example from C to E.

A major scale may be se as two idtical tetrachords separated by a whole tone. Each tetrachord consists of two whole tones followed by a semitone (i.e. whole, whole, half).

How To Learn Guitar Scales (with Pictures)

If a piece of music (or part of a piece of music) is in a major key, th the notes in the corresponding major scale are considered diatonic notes, while the notes outside the major scale are considered chromatic notes. Moreover, the key signature of the piece of music (or section) will gerally reflect the accidtals in the corresponding major scale.

For instance, if a piece of music is in E♭ major, th the sev pitches in the E♭ major scale (E♭ , F, G, A♭ , B♭ , C and D) are considered diatonic pitches, and the other five pitches (E♮ , F♯ /G♭ , A♮ , B♮ , and C♯ /D♭ ) are considered chromatic pitches. In this case, the key signature will have three flats (B♭ , E♭ , and A♭ ).

The figure below shows all 12 relative major and minor keys, with major keys on the outside and minor keys on the inside arranged around the circle of fifths.

The numbers inside the circle show the number of sharps or flats in the key signature, with the sharp keys going clockwise, and the flat keys counterclockwise from C major (which has no sharps or flats.) The circular arrangemt depds on harmonic relationships in the circle, usually reckoned at six sharps or flats for the major keys of F♯ = G♭ and D♯ = E♭ for minor keys.

Sev sharps or flats make major keys (C♯ major or C♭ major) that may be more convitly spelled with five flats or sharps (as D♭ major or B major).

The term major scale is also used in the names of some other scales whose first, third, and fifth degrees form a major triad.

Major Thirds Tuning

The melodic major scale is the combined scale that goes as Ionian ascding and as Aeolian dominant descding. It differs from melodic minor scale only by raising the third degree to a major third. In music, relative keys are the major and minor scales that have the same key signatures (harmonically equivalt), meaning that they share all the same notes but are arranged in a differt order of whole steps and half steps. A pair of major and minor scales sharing the same key signature are said to be in a relative relationship.

The relative minor of a particular major key, or the relative major of a minor key, is the key which has the same key signature but a differt tonic. (This is as opposed to parallel minor or major, which shares the same tonic.)

Relative

For example, F major and D minor both have one flat in their key signature at B♭; therefore, D minor is the relative minor of F major, and conversely F major is the relative major of D minor. The tonic of the relative minor is the sixth scale degree of the major scale, while the tonic of the relative major is the third degree of the minor scale.

The minor key starts three semitones below its relative major; for example, A minor is three semitones below its relative, C major.

Chromatic modulation in Bach's Du grosser Schmerzsmann, BWV 300, m. 5-6 ( Play  (help ·info ) with half cadce, Play  (help ·info ) with PAC) transitions from FM to its relative minor dm through the inflection of C♮ to C♯ betwe the second and third chords. This modulation does not require a change of key signature.

Relative keys are a type of closely related keys, the keys betwe which most modulations occur, because they differ by no more than one accidtal. Relative keys are the most closely related, as they share exactly the same notes.

The major key and the minor key also share the same set of chords. In every major key, the triad built on the first degree (note) of the scale is major, the second and third are minor, the fourth and fifth are major, the sixth minor and the sevth is diminished. In the relative minor, the same triads pertain. Because of this, it can occasionally be difficult to determine whether a particular piece of music is in a major key or its relative minor.

To distinguish a minor key from its relative major, one can look to the first note/chord of the melody, which usually is the tonic or the dominant (fifth note); The last note/chord also tds to be the tonic. A raised 7th is also a strong indication of a minor scale (instead of a major scale): For example, C major and A minor both have no sharps or flats in their key signatures, but if the note G♯ (the sevth note in A minor raised by a semitone) occurs frequtly in a melody, th this melody is likely in A harmonic minor, instead of C major.

Major

The term for relative key in German is Paralleltonart, while parallel key is Varianttonart. Similar terminology is used in most Germanic and Slavic languages, but not Romance languages. This is not to be confused with the term parallel chord, which dotes chords derived from the relative key in glish usage.Tamaño de ta previsualización JPG del archivo PDF: 252 × 599 píxel. New standard tuning offers thirds-based chords with simple fingerings; in particular, triads can be simply inverted with little left-hand movement. Since tertian triads and seventh chords are are the fundamental chords of conventional music, new standard tuning can be considered by guitarists wishing to play conventional music, for example jazz standards.

The acknowledgments to Robert Fripp, Guitar Circle, and Guitar Craft are for only identification purpos. I have no affiliation with Fripp or Guitar Circle, and I have not sought approval of this work (which has not received review). In 2014 I am delighted to note that Fripp's blsings included this 2013 benediction on NST popularization:

I love the idea of the NST leaving the cloister and being useful in the wider world. Let’s give the NST a helpful shove on its way.— Robert Fripp, in:Robert Fripp's Diary (Thursday, 14th November 2013) (html). Discipline Global Mobile (November 14 2013). Retrieved on 30 July 2014 .
