Very disappointed and expensive. What other devices have had good results and are cost effective as well?

I've had the Diaddrio packets in my cases for a couple of years and they still seem to be working. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the environment where you store your guitars. My house is generally around 50% humidity except for a few weeks in the winter (now) where the heat is running constantly and it's around 38%.

How To Use The D'addario Guitar Humidifier

Last night I was digging through the stuff that in was in my grandfather's case when I got his old Martin and found one of these in it. I'd never seen one before so I did a little research and found out they get pretty favorable reviews. I charged it up (with water) and in my Taylor case it went. And they only cost about $5.00.

Is this the same Herco unit you tried? It only lasted six weeks? I thought you just add water every week or so and it lasts almost forever.

Those packs can be re-hydrated and used over and over. I've been using some of the same ones for a few winters now.

Why And How To Humidify Your Guitar

I tried those Herco clay pots and was disappointed. They didn't change the humidity in my case. I prepped them properly etc. They simply did not hold enough water to make a difference and they dried out super fast.

Threads on this. If you are in need of constant humidification, like I am, the sponge system will be much more efficient. Six weeks for the Humidipak’s would be great here.

Herco Clay Guitar Humidifier

I've been using this one from Oasis this winter in New England, we are in a stretch of very cold and dry days (below 0 overnight) and so far, it has done the job admirably.

I prefer to use a nylon gig bag to store my guitar in the winter rather than the heavy wooden case it came with, and so far, I'm getting roughly a week's use before having to re-wet the sponge. If I used the better sealing wooden case the guitar came with, I could go longer without having to re-wet the sponge.

Still, re-wetting it once weekly which takes all of 90 seconds, is a very minor inconvenience to avoid cracks and other possible structural damage to my guitar.

Be careful that you don't over-humidify a guitar in a closed case. The moisture can damage the finish and the structure of the guitar. I damaged an expensive guitar doing this and sold it at a big loss.

True, I have used the 49% Boveda packs in all of my guitars now for the last two years. I don't use anything in the Spring and Summer months, as the RH is high enough to be fine on it's own. Some say the packs are expensive, but I feel it's a small price to pay versus repair damage costs.

The Two-Way Humidification System is a humidity MAINTENANCE device. If it's your first time using this product, then your guitar and its CASE should be correctly humidified in the 45 -54% RH ball park BEFORE you introduce the gel packs.

From the information you've given I suspect the RH was low when you introduce the packs. Try using damp sponges in your guitar case for a few days, or the 'conditioning packs' to boost the RH to the correct level. Then try again. The gel packs should last at least 3 months.

Beside what humidification system, what hydrometer are you guys using in the case? Because without an accurate reading, you wouldn't know if the humidifier is working. And where do you put the hydrometer? In the head stock compartment or in the sound hole?

I have an Ambient Weather wireless station with 3 remotes that I've mounted in the cases in the area above the top of the guitar's body. I don't have to open the cases to check the RH, just scroll through the main display.

I have the soap dish with a sponge in the area below the head but so far I haven't had to wet anything. When it does get to that point I'm going to try water beads this year.

Here's what happened to my rather expensive Martin guitar. I posted this in another thread and here as a reminder to be careful when humidifying a guitar.

I used a sponge type sound hole humidifier and kept the sponge fully saturated at all times. I did not check the humidity level at any time. It was months later, when I took the guitar out of the case, that I noticed that the finish had lifted in a number of areas, particularly on the back and sides where the guitar was pressed up against the case. The padding in the case had become somewhat like a sponge, I guess. A good luthier could fix the finish, but, I wasn't interested in having that done. Other signs of over-humidification probably corrected themselves when the guitar dried out, but, the finish damage remained.

In some cases, guitar bodies are over-humidified by well-meaning owners who, in an effort to prevent their guitars from drying, have gotten carried away with soundhole humidifiers. While high humidity usually will not crack the wood the way low humidity can, the adverse effects can be just as damaging and sometimes can be more costly to repair. The wood in a guitar can swell tremendously, causing glue joints to fail, finish to lift, and neck angles to go bad. Distortions in the wood can remain even after other damage has been repaired, leaving the guitar cosmetically disfigured.
